Man cuts throat, snatches cop's pistol, chases people in Delhi
CCTV footage of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed Sherwal running down the streets with a pistol in his hand.
NEW DELHI: In a bizarre incident, a man who had harmed himself with a knife and then snatched a pistol from a policeman chased people through Shahdara's Mansarovar Park on Thursday evening. It took a hawker to finally nab the man before he could do any harm to others.
Police received two calls at 6.40pm and 6.50 pm on Thursday about a man wielding a knife running amok in Nathu Colony Chowk. The person was identified as Krishan Sherwal, a resident of Hardev Puri. "That day, after he handed over the key of his room to the landlord, Sherwal tried to cut his own throat with a kitchen knife. Then bleeding, he began roaming in the area," said a police officer.
At Nathu Colony Chowk, assistant sub-inspector Jitender Panwar tried to overpower Sherwal around 6.15pm. The officer said, "Sherwal attacked the ASI with the knife and injured him on the hand. He then snatched the police officer's pistol and fired a round." Fortunately, no one was injured.
CCTV footage of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed Sherwal running down the streets with a pistol in his hand as people ducked behind anything they could see to save themselves. The video finally shows a hawker, later identified as Ankur, confronting him and grabbing him. The police officer said, "The man was then overpowered by ASI Panwar and other people. The pistol was recovered from his possession."
Sherwal was taken to a hospital, where, according to police, an examination showed he had damaged his windpipe.
A preliminary inquiry found that for the past two years, Sherwal, who engaged in cardboard packaging work, had been living separately from his wife and was suffering from depression.
A case was registered on the complaint of the injured policeman. Ankur was felicitated by Rohit Meena, DCP (Shahdara), for daring to stop the man without thinking of the risks to himself, thus preventing any potential harm to people.
Another video of the incident clearly depicts a crowded place that is sent into a panic when the appears running waving a pistol in his hand. Members of the public can then be seen running to save themselves from possible injuries. The video shows some policemen pursuing Sherwal and trying to catch him, but the armed man turns on the cops, forcing them instead to run away to safety.
