Panaji: Leader of the opposition and Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao on Saturday demanded that the government shut down all units that are illegally operating within the Cuncolim industrial estate. He said that if the government continues to turn a blind eye, locals will hold a protest.
“Stringent action needs to be initiated against all illegalities. With blatant violations coming to the fore during inspection, the time has come to permanently seal all such units in Cuncolim industrial estate which have turned out to be dens of illegalities and irregularities, causing severe pollution, loss to state revenue, and illegal encroachments,” said Alemao.
His remarks came a day after government departments conducted a surprise inspection at the estate. Alemao said that the government was forced to act in response to the legislative assembly questions that he submitted ahead of the coming budget session.
“This industrial estate is a curse on the people of Cuncolim. They are operating without proper environmental clearances,” said Alemao.
He also described the two-day ‘prashasan tumchya daari’ as a “public stunt” ahead of the coming Lok Sabha elections. He said that the grievances raised by the people have exposed the government’s failure.
