Transwoman cop tenders resignation in Coimbatore
A woman inspector keeps on hurling casteist and gender slurs at her, says constable R Nazriya
COIMBATORE: R Nazriya, 27, a transwoman constable attached to the special juvenile aid police wing, submitted resignation to city police commissioner V Balakrishnan on Saturday, alleging that she was mistreated by her superiors.
The commissioner has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Nazriya, who joined the police force in 2018, had attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison after she was allegedly harassed by three superiors in Ramanathapuram district. She was transferred to Coimbatore in 2020.
The constable, who spoke to reporters at the police commissionerate, said a woman inspector keeps on hurling casteist and gender slurs at her. "I can not continue in the police department and have decided to resign," she said.
Meanwhile, an officer refuted the allegations. "She was warned several times for turning up drunk to work. Two weeks ago, she tried to jump from the top of the police commissionerate. When an inspector tried to stop her, she accused him of harassment. After receiving several complaints, she was suspended two weeks ago," he said.
