New underpass to ease traffic at Astron

Rajkot: Severe traffic snarls near Astron underpass are expected to ease in the near future with the railways giving its nod for a new underpass near the existing one.
In a statement, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) said the decision was taken in the recently held meeting held between railway officials and the civic body.
The new underpass will be constructed on the railway track approach road beside the existing one. The current underpass is extremely narrow and leads to heavy traffic jams during peak hours.
RMC will pay Rs 2.8 crore to the railways initially.
Sources said that two divided roads each four metres wide are planned and the total length of this underpass will be 18 m with 2.5 m height. After this is completed, both underpasses will be used as one way for the commuters.
The existing underpass is a major headache every monsoon and RMC needs to stop its use due to heavy waterlogging.
However, sources said that the new underpass will also get waterlogged during rains because of the natural down gradient on this road.
