New Delhi, 19 March : On Saturday, India recorded over 800 new Covid-19 cases in a single day, crossing this mark for the first time in 126 days (over 4 months). With 843 fresh infections, the number of active cases has risen to 5,389. The Union Health Ministry has reported that the country’s total caseload has now increased to 4.46 crore.

Despite the increase, the number of active cases still only makes up 0.01% of the total number of infections in the country, and the national Covid-19 recovery rate remains high at 98.80%.

Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat currently have the highest number of viral infection cases, according to health ministry data.

Experts have attributed the recent rise in Covid-19 cases to the XBB.1.16 variant, which has been found in several states across the country, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Delhi, Telangana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Odisha, according to data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).

The variant was first detected in January when two samples tested positive for it, and as of March, 15 samples of the XBB 1.16 variant have been found.

Earlier this week, the health ministry advised certain states with high numbers of cases to adopt a risk assessment-based approach to prevent and contain the infection.
