CHENNAI: Expressing pride in participating in the golden jubilee celebrations of the state police's women's wing launched by his father
M Karunanidhi, chief minister M K Stalin released a stamp to mark the occasion and announced Nava Ratna schemes for the personnel at a function here on Friday.
The women's wing has come a long way since the first batch - one sub-inspector and 20 other personnel - were inducted in 1973, said Stalin, announcing that henceforth the roll-call parade would begin at 8am instead of 7am and that mansions would be built in Chennai and Madurai for policewomen coming to attend court hearings and other issues.
The long-pending demand of exclusive washrooms in all police stations will be fulfilled and more creches will be constructed, he said. Promising an award and trophy named after Kalaignar Karunanidhi for meritorious policewomen,
Stalin said they would be granted leave and transfers as per their wishes.
National-level firing competitions for policewomen will be conducted in Tamil Nadu, Stalin said, adding that a national-level seminar on 'women in the uniformed service' will also be held. A career guidance forum will be set up at the DGP's office, he said and inaugurated the 1.7 crore Aval scheme to train policewomen in various fields. At least 50,000 women have learned self-defence techniques in a 1.7 crore scheme.
All the 104 police boys and girls clubs will be provided with television sets with internet connections at a cost of Rs 2 crore, he said. Police personnel will be updated on laws and legal aids at a cost of Rs.2.3 crore. Stalin also released a stamp marking the celebrations of the golden jubilee at the programme.
