Coimbatore: The prison authorities have recovered seven cellphones from the inmates of the Coimbatore central prison in searches conducted over the past one week.
The authorities have also recovered accessories like mobile charges from the prisoners. Prison authorities said the searches were conducted by a team led by jailor Sivarajan on suspicion that the inmates were using cellphones that were sneaked into the prison with the help of their associates and relatives.
The officials found that the information was true and that few inmates were using cellphones discretely.
The inmates resisted the seizure when the officials found the gadgets hidden in the prison. However, the officials issued a stern warning and seized the phones. Police have booked cases against the prisoners who were using the phones.
Similarly, in a search conducted at Salem central prison, the authorities found a ganja packet smuggled into the jail premises and used by the inmates.
