KOLKATA: Akasa Air, the newest airline to hit Indian skies, will connect Kolkata on May 18 with daily flights to Bengaluru and Guwahati. The carrier will establish the first connectivity with the state a month earlier when it starts operating daily flights between Bengaluru and Bagdogra from April 17.
Akasa Air co-founder and chief commercial officer Praveen Iyer said this was only the beginning and the airline will attempt to connect Kolkata to all the metros and several other tier-II cities by this year end. "The flights to Bengaluru and Guwahati will be the first step towards adding more flights from Kolkata. We should be able to connect the other metros this year. The only uncertainty is slots at Delhi and Mumbai airports. Kolkata is a pretty important market in terms of network deployment and we will explore all opportunities," said Iyer.
Other carriers like Indigo, Air India, AirAsia, Vistara and SpiceJet have multiple flights on these sectors.
On May 18, the Akasa Air flight will take off from Bengaluru at 2.30pm and touch down in Kolkata at 5.15pm. The aircraft will take off for Guwahati at 5.55pm to reach there at 7.05pm. The return flight will take off from Guwahati at 7.45pm and land in Kolkata at 9.10pm. This aircraft will then do the Kolkata-Bengaluru flight, taking off from Kolkata at 9.50pm and reaching Bengaluru at 12.15 am.
A month prior to that, it will make its maiden flight to Bengal when it operates a flight between Bengaluru and Bagdogra on April 17. This flight will take off from Bengaluru at 7.30am and touch down in Bagdogra at 10.15am. The return flight will take off from Bagdogra at 10.55 am and reach Bengaluru at 1.45pm.
