Man charged with involuntary manslaughter in UNCW student's death freed in advance of trial
A man accused of driving impaired during a fatal accident on University of North Carolina Wilmington property is out on bond after a pretrial hearing.
Nicholas Henry Pohlman, who appeared in New Hanover County District Court on Thursday, is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, impaired driving, and consuming alcohol under 21 years of age in connection to an Oct. 1, 2022 incident that occurred shortly after midnight.
According to reports from the UNCW Police Department, Pohlman, who was 19 at the time, was driving a Jeep Wrangler recklessly in a grassy area of a parking lot at 632 South College Road, when it crashed. The lot behind Taco Bell is owned by the school.
Howard Lashon Coleman II, a sophomore student at the time, died as a result of the accident. He was one of two passengers inside the car. Pohlman was not a UNCW student.
A bond hearing before Judge Lindsey McKee was held Thursday with Pohlman being represented by attorney Buddy Allard. The prosecutor was assistant district attorney Kristi Severo.
Pohlman posted a bond but was later placed in custody after violating the terms of pretrial release conditions by consuming alcohol, according to court officials. McKee unsecured his bond so he will be released over the state's objections.
Allard challenged the accuracies of alcohol testing methods before Severo brought up the October incident while backing the results.
According to accounts, the Jeep was on top of Coleman and several people tried to push the vehicle to get it off his body while he was still alive.
Allard said Pohlman and his parents showed remorse for what happened during the tragic event.
"It was a tragic situation," he said.
Severo said Pohlman only cared about himself after the accident, and not for his friend.
"His concern that night was not for the life of Lashon," she said. "His number one primary goal that night was to figure out how to get out of trouble and to figure out how much trouble he was going to get in."
She said Coleman's family didn't come to court because it would have been his 21st birthday.
Along with having the original bond in place, Pohlman will be allowed to work in an establishment that doesn't serve alcohol and be screened for drugs while on a pre-trial release. He was also ordered to stay with parents and to wear an electronic ankle monitoring device.
According to New Hanover County Court records, a court date is scheduled for July 13, 2023.
