MUMBAI: Parents of
Darshan Solanki, who recently died on the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) campus, travelled to Mumbai to file a police complaint alleging “foul play” in his death on Thursday.
Parents said they believed Darshan did not commit suicide as stated by the institute authorities. The Powai police, which registered this as a case of accidental death, refused to file an FIR in the case. They asked the family to go to SIT. Earlier this month, an interim report by the institute on the death by suicide of Darshan Solanki, a first-year student at the institute, ruled out caste-based discrimination as alleged by his family, while citing his “deteriorating academic performance” and his introvert nature.
“I believe my son’s death under suspicious circumstances is a murder committed at the hands of those individuals in the institute harassing and discriminating against him on the basis of caste,” said Ramesh Solanki, Darshan’s father.
