Pakyong, 17 March: TikTok is facing concerns over security risks, particularly about the possibility that its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, could share user data with the Chinese government or use the app to spread propaganda and misinformation. The United States has expressed national security concerns with respect to data integrity and is investigating the issue through the Committee on Foreign Investment. British, Danish, and Canadian authorities have also banned TikTok on government-issued phones. While some tech privacy advocates argue that other tech companies also exploit user information, others believe that there is legitimate cause for concern. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is set to testify next week before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on the company’s privacy and data-security practices and its relationship with the Chinese government.
