Why seek validation from West: Utpal
Panaji: Former defence minister Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal Parrikar had a critical take on the celebrations surrounding the recent Oscar awards, where Telugu film RRR won an Oscar for best original song.
Parrikar said that the reaction in India over the Oscar awards suggests that some parts of India still seek validation from the West.
“I don’t understand the need to talk about national issues on an international platform or the way we go ga-ga over some foreign country giving an award to one of our movies, or a song in that movie. It is a good achievement but somehow I think, do we still seek validation from the western world?” said Parrikar.
SS Rajamouli’s film RRR became the first Indian production to win an Oscar, with the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ creating history by winning an Oscar for best original song. Along with RRR, the Netflix documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ also won an award for best documentary.
Parrikar, who was speaking at a memorial lecture organised in honour of his father, said that the decolonisation mindset has yet to take root. “We got invaded, colonised, and got our political freedom in 1947, but sometimes I think that for some of our population, in their mind, decolonisation has still not taken place,” said Parrikar.
