Tensions flare in courtroom for man accused of shooting state trooper in Paterson

It was a tense morning in Judge Sohail Mohammed's courtroom as the man accused of shooting a New Jersey State Trooper in Paterson following an attempted robbery earlier this month kept staring down law enforcement officers gathered for his detention hearing Friday.

Jocquise Timmons, of Paterson, is accused of shooting an unidentified state trooper who was doing surveillance of the East 26th Street home that Timmons allegedly tried to break into, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Timmons fled following the shooting and was arrested on attempted murder charges in North Carolina on March 3. The trooper, who is expected to recover, had a compound fracture on his left leg, the affidavit said.

The detention hearing was adjourned until March 28 but Mohammed informed Timmons of his charges Friday, which also include weapons offenses, three second-degree aggravated assault and one third-degree aggravated assault charge.

Mohammed told Timmons to pay attention while he was speaking to him as he kept staring off to the left. Timmons said he was getting threats and the people seated there were making gun gestures at him. He kept shaking his head as the proceeding continued.

A Ring doorbell camera showed two men attempting to break into an East 26th Street home through the front door, one wearing a "distinct black and gray Nike hooded zip-up sweatshirt with black and gray sweatpants," the affidavit stated. The sweatsuit had a reverse chevron design on the jacket and the men wore gloves and facemasks to cover the lower half of their faces.

According to the affidavit, when they weren't able to gain entry into the home, the two men tried to get in the side door before leaving.

The Ring camera footage also caught the shooting, showing someone wearing an outfit identical to Timmons step out of a white car, cross the street and hide behind another parked vehicle, the affidavit said.

The affidavit states that Timmons stepped out from behind the vehicle, assumed "a shooting stance" and fired several shots at the undercover state police vehicles as the unmarked cars joined another in following a suspicious blue Honda Odyssey.

Nine shell casings were recovered from the scene and five bullet holes were found in two of the unmarked cars. The affidavit said an investigation showed the camera system was off by an hour and 10 minutes and that the video lines up with the exact time of the shooting at 12:50 a.m.

Other surveillance footage obtained from a fixed camera around East 26th Street allegedly shows Timmons walking down the street two minutes after the shooting, across the street from where a 10mm Glock was found, the affidavit stated.

The van allegedly used in the attempted robbery was later found in the area of East 29th Street and Park Avenue not long after the shooting. Video footage shows three people getting out of the vehicle, with two escaping on foot. One of the other men was arrested by police and taken to the state police's Totowa station where he gave a statement, according to the affidavit. Police did not state if the third person was arrested.

The man identified the man in the two-toned sweats as Timmons, calling him "John John" and said he was in the van with them at the time of the attempted robbery. The other suspect said Timmons was in the vehicle prior to him hearing gunshots.
