COIMBATORE: The city police on Wednesday arrested a 23-year-old woman for posting videos of her wielding deadly weapons on
Instagram. The videos in question were posted a couple of years ago and some of them went viral after a murder was committed near a court in the city recently.
Police said Vinothini, 23, a native of Virudhunagar district, was a member of Praga Brothers, an Instagram page, in which its members posted videos holding weapons and provoked their rival gang members. She also posted videos on her Instagram page – Fans call me Thamana.
A week ago, the Peelamedu police registered a case against Vinothini under The Arms Act and launched a search for her.
Meanwhile, Vinothini went underground. While in hiding, she released a video clip stating that she has not released any video of her wielding weapons recently. Videos in question were posted two years back. They went viral on social media recently and it drew the attention of police. She further stated that she has not involved in any criminal activity recently and is married and six months pregnant.
After she released the clip, police tightened the search and found that she was hiding at Sangariri in Salem district. Police arrested her on Wednesday and brought her to Coimbatore. They took her to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for a check-up and later produced her before a judicial magistrate. She was remanded in judicial custody.
Police said she was arrested in 2021 on the charges of possessing ganja.
