Panaji: In a freak accident, a driver died due to burn injuries he suffered when the car he was driving caught fire after it collided against a parked four-wheeler at Tonca Caranzalem in the wee hours of Thursday.
Police have identified the deceased as Sujay Surlakar, a native of Maharashtra. At the time of the incident, Surlakar was alone in the car.
Police said he was driving the car after leaving a restaurant at Miramar. As the car reached Tonca, Surlakar reportedly stopped the vehicle along the road.
Referring to CCTV footage, police said the car could be seen moving slowly after some time and then it collided against a car parked along the roadside.
The CCTV footage later showed smoke emanating from Surlakar’s car and subsequently the car getting engulfed in flames.
Police said the driver died due to burn injuries he sustained. They said it appeared that he could not get out of the car when it was in flames. Fire from the ill-fated car spread to three other cars that also got damaged in the process.
