Detroit man to serve at least 8 years in prison in 2021 shooting, police chase
LANSING — A Detroit man who injured two people in a 2021 shooting in Lansing was sent to prison Thursday for a minimum of eight years.
Karl Alphonso Lockridge III, 35, was charged with nine counts following a shooting at the intersection of Norman and Herbert streets and a subsequent police chase, including assault with intent to murder and wearing body armor while committing a violent crime.
He pleaded guilty in November to the body armor count, as well as added counts of discharging a weapon from a vehicle causing injury and felony firearm possession. The plea deal that saw other charges dismissed called for a fixed minimum sentence of eight years in prison, court records indicate.
Under the sentence from Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, Lockridge will have to serve the mandatory two years in prison for felony firearm possession before he begins serving a minimum of six years on the other two counts.
A 33-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were injured in the shooting. Lockridge was arrested following a police pursuit and crash in downtown Lansing. An Ingham County Sheriff's deputy tried to stop the driver, who sped off and crashed into another vehicle at West Ottawa and North Walnut streets, police said.
No one was injured in the crash.
In a statement submitted to the court, one of the shooting victims said Lockridge showed no regard for human life when he fired on people he did not know.
