A court in Pakistan’s Lahore provided temporary relief to Imran Khan as it issued an order to the police to halt its bid to arrest the former Prime Minister till 10 am tomorrow morning.

The court’s order came after tensions prevailed outside Imran Khan’s Lahore residence as his supporters clashed with the Pakistani police, early Wednesday morning, leaving several protesters and some cops wounded.

According to reports, dressed in riot gear, the Pakistani police—who yesterday arrived at the Pakistan-Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) chief’s Lahore home to arrest him—fought pitched battles with the cricketer-turned politician’s supporters and his party workers leading to chaos in the Pakistani city.

Reports quoting eyewitnesses said the police baton charged Khan’s supporters and also fired tear gas cannisters, some of which landed inside the house, on the lawns of the former PM. The raucous crowd hurled stones at the cops leading to many of the policemen sustaining injuries.

Videos shared by Khan’s PTI party showed tear gas shells landing on the lawns of Khan’s house. They also alleged that the police resorted to live firing on the crowd.

Imran Khan sharing videos and images of live bullets, allegedly fired at the crow, in a tweet claimed that the police fired live rounds on the protesters despite him signing a surety bond which the DIG refused to entertain.

He wrote: “From tear gas & water cannons, they have now resorted to live firing. I signed a surety bond last evening, but the DIG refused to even entertain it. There is no doubt of their mala fide intent,” Imran Khan further claimed in a tweet sharing a video in which supporters of the former prime minister are showing bullets.”

Khan’s PTI party celebrating the court order, tweeted a video of the former PM’s celebrating outside his house. “The police and rangers sent to harm Imran Khan were pushed back by the people,” PTI wrote along with the video.

Another video posted by PTI showed Imran Khan, donning a mask, meeting his supporters and party workers outside his Lahore home.

Khan claimed that “real intent” by the Islamabad Police behind the “mere drama” of his arrest in the Toshakhana case was “to abduct and assassinate” him.

The ‘London Plan’

Yesterday, Imran Khan accused Pakistan’s federal government of planning his arrest as part of a “London plan” to finish all cases against former premier Nawaz Sharif.

In a video message on his official Twitter handle, Khan said: “This is part of the London plan and an agreement has been signed there to put Imran in jail, make the PTI fall and finish all cases against Nawaz Sharif.”

Warrants suspended

Last week, The Balochistan High Court suspended arrest warrants issued against former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for two weeks.

As per a report by Geo News, the Balochistan HC suspended for two weeks, arrest warrants issued against Khan, providing temporary relief to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief. The warrants were issued by a local court in a hate speech case pertaining to inciting public against state institutions registered against Khan in Quetta.

A team of Quetta police had arrived in Lahore to arrest the ex-PM after a non-bailable warrant was issued against him by the Quetta judicial magistrate in a case registered at the Bijli Ghar police station for allegedly “maligning” Pakistan’s state institutions.

According to the Geo News report, a case was registered by the Balochistan police against Imran Khan following a complaint filed a man named Abdul Khalil Karak.

It’s an “uphill task” for Islamabad to bring the Kashmir issue into the “centre” of the agenda at the United Nations, Pakistan Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said.

Addressing a presser on the sidelines of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the UN, Zardari, while responding to question from the press that drew parallels between Palestine and Kashmir, admitted that Pakistan faces a “particularly uphill task” to try and get Kashmir into the centre of the agenda at the United Nations.

In a snide reference to India, the 34-year-old Pakistan Minister fumblingly said that whenever Islamabad brings up Kashmir issue at the global forum, “our friend…. Our neighbouring countries” vociferously and strongly object it. He said that: “they perpetuate a post-fact narrative where they try to claim that this is not a dispute for the United Nations, that this is not a disputed territory recognised for the international community.”

On being asked on parallels between the Kashmir issue and Palestine, Zardari claimed that parallels are “justified” as “there are many similarities between the plight of the people of Kashmir and the plight of the people of Palestine.” He said it was fair to say both issues remain unaddressed by the United Nations and Pakistan would like to see an extra focus not only on Palestine but also on Kashmir.

Zardari further claimed that while Islamabad finds it “difficult to get the truth across”, they are persistent and will continue such efforts at every opportunity, whether it is in the UN Security Council or other events “to mention both the plight of the people of Palestine and of Kashmir.”

Islamabad rakes up the Kashmir issue regularly at almost every UN forum and platform, irrespective of the topic or agenda being discussed. However, the its agenda-driven rhetoric is almost every time shot down by the wider UN membership that considers Kashmir to be a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan.
