JNAC drain waste treatment plan to keep rivers healthy
Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) held a meeting with the officials of the Tata Steel to plan the treatment of drain water flowing into Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers.
Special officer of JNAC Sanjay Kumar told TOI on Wednesday that the civic body is strategising a plan to solve the problem of pollution in both the rivers, which pass by the Steel City.
Discussions were held with the officials of Tata Steel as 34 drains under the command area of Tata Steel or JNAC flow into both the rivers. A joint survey would be carried out and the report tabled within a week’s time. Thereafter, an action plan will be formulated, he added.
A packaged sewage treatment plant (PSTP) or sewage treatment plant (STP) would be set up to process drain water before being released into the rivers, said Kumar.
The PSTPs or STPs would be set up either by the Tata Steel or the JNAC at various places. Besides, wire meshing would be installed at places where the drains meet the rivers so that solid waste materials like plastic do not flow into the rivers.
Moreover, the JNAC would carry out surprise checks to ensure that private tankers do not dump sewage matter into drains connected to rivers. The offenders would have to pay a hefty fine, he said.
Organisations that generate over 100kg wet waste a day must have composting unit to treat waste before disposal. Violators would be fined, he added.
