PRAYAGRAJ: The city police on Thursday stumbled upon 32-second CCTV footage of the sensational Dhoomanganj attack in which Umesh Pal, the key witness in the BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case, can be seen grappling with an attacker, who later fires at him. Police claim that this assailant is mafia don Atiq Ahmed’s son Mohammad Asad.
A senior STF official preferring anonymity said, “Asad, son of jailed gangster Atiq Ahmed, is seen opening fire in the 32-second video footage that went viral on social media on Thursday. Asad, wanted in connection with Dhoomanganj shootout incident, is carrying Rs 5 lakh cash reward on his head.”
The video shows Umesh running towards a narrow passage towards his house and the assailant chasing and firing at him multiple times at point blank range. A girl is also spotted coming out of an open door in the narrow passageway and running towards the end of passage where the scuffle between Pal and the assailant was underway.
She later runs back towards the end of the passage. The footage shows that the girl apparently made an abortive bid to save Umesh, but had to run back for her life after witnessing the assailants opening fire.
In the last footage, one of Umesh’s police gunners — Raghvendra Singh — is seen running behind Umesh and another assailant, Guddu Muslim, blocking the entrance of the passage and hurling a bomb leading to heavy smoke.
On February 24, Umesh Pal, the prime witness in BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case in 2005, and his two police gunners were attacked outside his house in Sulemsarai locality under the limits of Dhoomanganj police station. While Umesh and the police gunner were declared dead at a city hospital the same day, the other police gunner, Raghvendra, later died at a Lucknow hospital during treatment.
Highly placed police sources told TOI that they have managed to compile many footage from several CCTV sets installed in the vicinity. “These footages have undoubtedly helped us ascertain the identities of the assailants as well as their exact number.”
An FIR was registered against jailed mafia don Atiq Ahmed, his brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, Atiq’s wife Shaista Parveen, Guddu Muslim, Ghulam, two sons of Atiq and others with Dhoomanganj police station.
