NAVI MUMBAI: A 56-year-old builder was shot dead by two unidentified men on a bike in Nerul's Sector 6 on Wednesday evening.
Police said the assailants pumped three bullets into Savji Manjiri, director of Imperia Developers, at point-blank range seconds after he sat in his SUV to return to his CBD-Belapur residence. Police suspect Manjiri may have been killed over a land dispute.
"After having lunch at his relative's place in Nerul, Manjiri walked to his SUV parked on the road. As soon as he sat inside, two men on a bike came near his SUV and pumped three bullets into him at point-blank range. Manjiri sustained bullet injuries to his temple and neck, which proved fatal," said DCP (zone-1) Vivek Pansare. "As Manjiri was a builder and property investor, we suspect he was killed over some land dispute. We are scanning the CCTV camera footage of the area to identify the two men."
Senior inspector Tanaji Bhagat of Nerul police station, where the murder case has been registered, said they rushed to the spot as soon as locals alerted them about the firing incident. "Police took Manjiri to NMMC Hospital in Vashi, where he was declared 'brought dead'," he said. Bhagat said Manjiri often travelled between Navi Mumbai and Gujarat for property-related business.
Bharat Patel, director of Askhar Aspire Developers, and others in the local builders' fraternity offered condolences.
Condemning the killing, Manohar Shroff, senior vice-president of MCHI Navi Mumbai unit, said: "It could have been either due to some plot or monetary dispute."
