CHENNAI: Minister for railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday said two out of the six bowstring girders have been fabricated on the Elephant Gate bridge, which is being reconstructed.

Dayanidhi Maran, the Union minister said the progress of the bridge work had been affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic and related restrictions.
"Now work is taken up at a fast pace to avoid hardship to the public. All the substructure works of Railways have been completed. Approach portion embankment work is in progress by the state government, and the completion of the project would depend on the approach work progress," the minister said.
The railway overbridge is being reconstructed at a 50:50 cost shared between Railways and the Chennai Corporation.
An amount of Rs 23.39 crore was allotted and around Rs 20 crore has been utilised. The bowstring and bridge work are done by Railways and road work is done by the corporation.
The bridge, dates back to the British period, connects crucial parts of North Chennai with Central Chennai.
