Kanpur: In a major haul, city’s Sachendi police intercepted a truck coming from Jharkhand’s Ranchi and seized 30 quintals of opium on Wednesday.
Acting on a tip-off, Sachendi police laid a trap ahead of Bhauti overbridge and intercepted a truck. Upon searching the vehicle, they found opium concealed in sacks and arrested one person, while one other of his aides managed to flee. Police said, “For the past several years, these people have been smuggling drugs to Rajasthan’s Jodhpur from Ranchi in Jharkhand. The cost of the seized opium estimated to Rs 1.5 crore in international market,” said ACP West Lakhan Singh and added, “The arrested person has been identified as Gulab Sharma, a native of Hanuman Nagar in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan.”
ACP added, “A case has been booked under sections 8/15/60 (3) of NDPS Act against the arrested person. Searches are underway to arrest the absconding aide of Gulab Sharma.”
ACP said that the police team involved in a breakthrough has been rewarded with a cash prize of Rs 50,000.tnn
