Suspected armed man hospitalized after being shot by Mesa police
A man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning after being shot by Mesa police.
Police officers responded to a report of shots fired around 7:15 a.m. at an apartment complex located near North Standage and West University Drive, police said in a news release. Several witnesses gave a suspect description and said the man was running across University Drive with something in his hands.
When the man was located, police said he fired a weapon at officers. One officer returned fire, striking him at least once. The man, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said in the news release.
Mesa police said a handgun was located near the shooting. Additional details regarding the shooting were not released by police.
No officer was hurt in the shooting.
Traffic on West University Drive from Alma School Road to Longmore Street was shut down. As of Wednesday afternoon, the area remained closed until further notice, police said in a tweet.
