VADODARA: MS University’s Faculty of Social Work was in midst of a controversy after student leaders linked to the ABVP, the right-wing supported student outfit, protested over a professor from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi being invited to a function.
The faculty had organized a function on Wednesday to celebrate its 74th Foundation Day.
For this, it had organized a session ‘Respecting diversity through joint social action’ at the Dr I G Patel seminar hall in which professor Zubair Meenai from the Department of Social Work of Jamia Millia Islamia and Sachin Oza, executive director of Development Support Centre and alumnus of faculty’s 1990 batch was invited.
But as the function started, a group of student leaders linked with the ABVP reached the faculty and started raising slogans.
Later, they questioned faculty dean professor Bhavna Mehta over the presence of Zubair Meenai at the function.
The student leaders alleged that the professor had a communist mindset, had made anti-national remarks and adverse comments on Nanaji Deshmukh.
Even as the faculty officials tried to convince the group that the academician is of high repute, the student leaders continued their protest and raised slogans.
Surprisingly, after the protest, Mehta left the faculty premises. The faculty officials moved the invited guest to a safer location till the crowd dispersed.
