NEW DELHI: There is no proposal to introduce remote voting for domestic migrants, and only a concept note was circulated to political parties for discussion, the government has told the Parliament.
The opposition parties had strongly opposed the proposal in the meeting called by the EC on January 16.
In reply to a question asked by Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Shukla, the law and justice ministry quoted the election commission to say that “a concept note on improving voter participation of domestic migrants using remote voting was circulated to all national and state political parties. It included matters like defining a migrant voter, addressing the territorial concept, the method of remote voting and counting of votes, enforcement of model code of conduct, setting up of controlled environment to ensure free and fair voting, and so on.”
It said the EC held a discussion with political parties on January 16, and has also solicited written views on the concept note by February 28.
