After Delhi tourists, Mumbai visitors attacked at Anjuna
Panaji: As Goa contends with the salvos of claims and denials over the alleged knife attack on Delhi tourists at Anjuna, the area’s police on Thursday arrested two Camurlim men for assaulting a pair of Mumbai tourists.
Police said that two friends from Kalyan, Mumbai, were travelling towards Anjuna on Tuesday and the Mapusa men were on their way home. Police said an argument between the tourists and the locals broke out at Assagao over a minor accident.
Subsequently, the tourists resumed their journey to Anjuna and both the locals followed them. Police said that the locals pelted stones at the tourists near a petrol pump at Anjuna.
After the locals fled the scene, the tourists filed a complaint against unknown persons at the Anjuna police station. Police said that after scanning CCTV footage, the licence plate of the accused was identified and they were arrested soon thereafter.
Anjuna PI Prashal Dessai said that Viraj Parsekar, 25, and Siddhart Khorjuvekar, 29, have been arrested in the case. They are residents of Camurlim, Bardez.
As for the March 5 case involving Delhi tourists, Anjuna police had recently arrested five persons.
The attack occurred on March 5 at an Anjuna hotel. Explaining the sequence of events, chief minister Pramod Sawant had said, “The tourist first hit the waiter with a stone, and the waiter then called more people, who attacked the tourist with a knife.”
A quarrel had been initially stoked because the waiter had apparently told the tourists not to smoke in an area where it was prohibited. Police said that the hotel manager had asked the waiter to leave the property to avoid escalating the matter. However, the waiter later returned with his brother and chanced upon the tourists. A heated argument erupted again and a few more locals joined the fray and a fight ensued.
