The often-overlooked 2024 Subaru Legacy offers luxury-grade refinement in a blend-in package.
What kind of vehicle is the 2024 Subaru Legacy? What does it compare to?
The 2024 Subaru Legacy is a mid-size all-wheel-drive sedan with optional turbo power. Shop it against the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
Is the 2024 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Though far from exciting, the Legacy is a solid, well-equipped choice with the security of all-weather traction. It’s a 6.7 out of 10 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2024 Subaru Legacy?
Aside from Harman/Kardon audio now fitted to the mid-level Legacy Sport trim, these models carry into 2023 unchanged.
The Legacy wears traditional three-box sedan styling, though it’s a close relative to the automaker’s rugged Outback crossover SUV. Clean but conventional outside, the Legacy’s interior is the real standout here. Its big 11.3-inch touchscreen (standard on all but the cheapest version) is oriented vertically, akin to Volvo and Tesla. It’s a neat look, even if the display itself isn’t all that great.
Underhood, the 182-hp flat-4 that motivates most versions provides adequate thrust and excellent fuel economy (30 mpg combined), given its standard all-wheel drive. The optional turbocharged flat-4 in the Legacy XT is noticeably quicker, though its throttle can be a bit snappy. A CVT innocuously shifts power to each corner. The Legacy’s ride is comfy, even in the not-so-sporty Sport trim level.
Interior space is vast, with a pleasing design and supportive front seats. The big touchscreen fitted to Premium and higher trims has wireless smartphone mirroring, but its display washes out in bright light.

Styling

Is the Subaru Legacy a good-looking car?
It’s handsome, but not stylish. We rate it a solid 5; a point dialed back for exterior blah and one added back for a slick cabin.
The 2024 Subaru Legacy is a conservative choice, with no pretense of fastback-like styling. It’s dowdy compared to its direct rivals, but that might work for you. The Sport version looks mildly dressier—if you squint.

Performance
The 2024 Subaru Legacy’s supple ride is a highlight.
Subaru’s biggest sedan has a luxury-grade ride, and turbo versions can be pretty peppy. We rate it a 6, with a point added to average for its ability to smother big bumps in Mercedes-Benz-rivaling comfort.
Is the Subaru Legacy 4WD?
Yes it is, and that may be its biggest selling point for many.

Comfort & Quality
The Legacy’s huge interior offers stretch-out space.
Subaru squeezes lots of legroom into both the 2024 Legacy’s front and rear seats. A fairly big trunk by sedan standards elevates this sedan to an 8 on the TCC scale.
All but the base Legacy come with 10-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat, which is wrapped in cloth in base, Premium, and Sport trims, or leather in Limited and Touring XT versions. The Touring XT even includes an adjustable under-knee bolster.

Features
The 2024 Subaru Legacy can be a pretty good value if you don’t dive into the deep end.
Subaru offers five versions of the 2024 Legacy sedan, two of which have additional option packages. The best values here are toward the lower end; figure between $28,000 and $33,000 for a well-equipped model.
Our 8 out of 10 rating for features is calculated from this sedan’s big touchscreens, its great crash-avoidance tech, and good overall value. If only it had a better warranty than the 3-year/36,000-mile coverage offered from the factory.

Fuel Economy
The 2024 Subaru Legacy doesn’t use much fuel.
Is the Subaru Legacy good on gas?
It’s pretty green for an all-wheel-drive sedan, and even turbo models are somewhat frugal given their power output. The lineup rates a 4 on the TCC scale thanks to the base engine’s 27 mpg city, 35 highway, 30 combined rating.
Turbos check in at 23/31/26 mpg. Subaru says regular fuel is fine for either car.
