The 2023 Ram 1500 packs plenty of accessible tech into its pickup lineup, which delights as much as a work-ready Tradesman as it does a brash TRX.
What kind of vehicle is the 2023 Ram 1500? What does it compare to?
The Ram 1500 is a full-size pickup. Compare it to the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and GMC Sierra 1500.
Is the 2023 Ram 1500 a good truck?
It’s an excellent choice among big pickups. A terrific ride, flexible powertrains, and lots of options make the Ram 1500 a must-shop if you need this much capability. Its average safety rating limits its TCC Rating to 5.6 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2023 Ram 1500?
The Ram lineup mostly sees small tweaks for 2023, including a new Limited Elite package with a suede-like headliner and some additional bed tie-downs. Higher-end with the Off-Road package can (bizarrely) be optioned up with 22-inch wheels wearing all-terrain tires. And an upsized digital instrument cluster is newly optional.
Ram also offers a version called the 1500 Classic, which is available in limited trim levels. It’s a continuation of the previous body style, and it makes little sense at this point unless you’re a budget-conscious fleet shopper.
Otherwise, the Ram 1500 lineup retains its three-box shape. You’ll only find four-door versions, including a Quad Cab with short rear doors or a full crew cab that can double as a family-friendly choice. Box lengths vary by trim, but include either a 5-foot-7 or 6-foot-4 option. All versions wear relatively sleek lines with little of the big-rig swagger that defined most of the last 30 years for Ram. Base Tradesman versions have blacked-out trim, but chrome or color-matched bumpers and grilles are widely available. Wheel sizes stretch up to 22 inches in top trims.
Most Rams use either a 3.6-liter V-6 rated at 305 hp or a 395-hp 5.7-liter V-8, both of which include a mild-hybrid system that saves a little fuel and provides even more linear acceleration. A twin-turbo inline-6 will eventually replace the V-8, so consider pushing the pause button if you don’t need to buy today. There’s also a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6, but it’s shockingly expensive even though fuel economy impresses. Topping the lineup is the TRX with its off-road suspension and a supercharged V-8 rated at 702 hp. We don’t have to tell you that it’s downright nuts to drive. All models use a wonderful 8-speed automatic transmission.
2023 Ram 1500
Styling
The 2023 Ram 1500 trades semi truck for swagger truck.
Is the Ram 1500 a good-looking truck?
It’s not as cool as the 1994 model that brought with it big-rig styling, but the latest Ram is a decent truck. It’s even better inside, which is where it earns the bulk of its 7 out of 10 rating.
Up front, the Ram wears a broad bandana of a grille that melts into narrow headlights. Its side profile is utterly conventional, especially compared to rivals.
2023 Ram 1500
Performance
The Ram 1500 boasts a luxury-car ride, with refined and powerful engine choices.
With its coil-sprung rear suspension and available air springs, the Ram 1500 can ride wonderfully. Its engine choices are also superb, helping net a 7 on the TCC scale.
Is the Ram 1500 4WD?
All models except for the TRX come standard with rear-wheel drive. And all models except the HFE can be optionally equipped with four-wheel drive.

Comfort & Quality
The 2023 Ram 1500 is downright spacious inside—and outside.
Ram fits a lovely interior in its full-size pickup, but it takes stepping up to costlier models to get the nicest materials. All have good space up front and popular crew cabs have a huge rear seat. Add in a huge bed with lots of storage and access tricks and we land at an 8 out of 10.
The Ram comes standard with a three-piece bench seat up front, though two will be happier. Buckets divided by a console are widely available, as are power adjustment, heating, and even cooling.
2023 Ram 1500
Safety
The 2023 Ram 1500 has a mixed crash-test record, and it lacks standard automatic emergency braking.
How safe is the Ram 1500?
That depends on who you ask. The IIHS says it can be a Top Safety Pick. The NHTSA rates it five stars overall in popular crew-cab form but just four stars as an extended-cab model. A lack of standard automatic emergency braking dials it back to just 5 out of 10.
Ram fits automatic emergency braking to models above the Big Horn. This essential tech is a reasonable $600 or so on Tradesman and Big Horn models, but that doesn’t mean every truck has it.
2023 Ram 1500
Features
Ram offers a lot of equipment for the money, at least compared to other full-size pickups.
It’s hard to see any full-size truck as a value play, but the Ram 1500 can be a decent deal among its competitive set.
However, it’s just a 5 on the TCC scale since its small standard screen and its lack of standard automatic emergency braking cancel out a wide range of options and otherwise good feature set.
2023 Ram 1500
Fuel Economy
The Ram 1500 lineup is somewhat efficient by big pickup standards.
Is the Ram 1500 good on gas?
It’s a big pickup, so the answer here is no. But the Ram 1500 tends to be a little thriftier than many of its competitors.
We rate it at 2 out of 10 based on higher-volume 6-cylinder models. Turbodiesel Rams would rate a 3 separately, while just about anything with a V-8 will struggle to top 1 out of 10.
