Teen charged with murder in double shooting of Vanderburgh County brothers

EVANSVILLE — More than two weeks after police say 18-year-old Austin Ousley shot and killed one man and gravely wounded another inside a rural Vanderburgh County farmhouse, prosecutors have charged him with felony murder.

Ousley, who reportedly shot himself after the Feb. 27 shooting, is accused by police of killing 36-year-old Shawn Wildt and seriously wounding his brother, 42-year-old Chad Wildt.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Noah Robinson will provide an update to media Wednesday afternoon, he said.

According to court records, Prosecutor Diana Moers on Wednesday filed three charges against Ousley: murder and attempted murder, both Level 1 felonies, and breaking and entering a residential dwelling, a Level 6 felony.

According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, the Wildt brothers were investigating a series of break-ins at a farmhouse in the 5100 block of Cypress Dale Road when Ousley opened fire.

A second teenager, identified by police as Ousley's friend, was inside the home during the shooting and dialed 911 to report the incident. Robinson has not publicly identified the 17-year-old nor disclosed what charges they could face.

According to body camera footage released by the sheriff's office, deputies and city police located Ousley hours after the shooting outside the Morgan Avenue Rural King. He reportedly shot himself in the head, and police transported him to a hospital for treatment.

The sheriff's office has said little about Ousley's current condition. According to court records, a warrant for Ousley's arrest was issued Wednesday.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
