Congress to protest seeking solution to Pachanady fires
Mangaluru: Former MLA BA Mohiuddin Bava said that a protest will be staged at Pachanady on March 17, demanding a permanent solution to the fire mishap instances being reported at the dump yard of MCC in Pachanady.
He told reporters here on Tuesday that a protest would be held by the Congress party, along with the residents in Pachanady as well as nearby areas. Bondel, Pachanady and Vamanjoor residents have been threatened by frequent fire mishaps in Pachanady, said Bava.
“Officials rush to the scene only when a fire is reported at the dumping yard in Pachanady. However, it is the residents of the locality who suffer for more than 10 days once a fire is noticed. I have visited the area many times during the fire incidents, but the local MLA has failed to visit the spot,” Bava said.
Officials should find a permanent solution to prevent fire incidents at Pachanady. Instead, the MCC is planning to acquire 10 acres of additional land for the waste management unit. However, there is no need for it, he said and cautioned that recurring fire incidents may affect religious shrines in nearby areas too.
He added that Congress would also hold a protest against the unscientific discharge of untreated water from Pachanady.
Fire under control, says MCC commissioner
MCC commissioner K Channabasappa said that the fire at Pachanady is under control and efforts are being continued. He said while the smoke continues to billow from the site, measures like soil capping are being taken to control it. Meanwhile, 10 earthmover machines are used to segregate the waste heaps and water is being sprayed on the area through five fire tenders, he added.
