MYSURU: Mysuru district health officer Dr KH Prasad on Tuesday claimed social and health factors are significant reasons for differences in sex ratio. Presiding over the divisional-level workshop on Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994 organised by the department of health and family here, Prasad said that in the last two decades there has been a significant change in gender ratio. In 2001-2002, the ratio was 964 females per 1,000 males whereas it was 953 females per 1,000 males in 2011-12.
Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, and Mandya districts have seen a positive change in gender ratio for the last six years. He said if gender ratio gap increases there may be challenges in finding brides or grooms may have to pay dowry to find a match and even the custom of polyandry may come into existence.
Recalling an incident wherein a religious institution received 11,750 marriage proposals to marry 200 women, deputy director at the department of health Dr Vivek Dorai said that if the gender gap increases similar situation may arise in the society.
