All India Kisan Sabha-led march of farmers, Tribals inches closer to Mumbai

Thousands of farmers and Tribals are marching towards Mumbai from Nashik district in northern Maharashtra. This march entered Thane district on Wednesday. They began a foot march from Dindori town on Sunday in support of various demands including immediate financial relief of Rs 600 per quintal to onion growers, uninterrupted power supply for 12 hours and farm loan waiver.

The farmers are also demanding measures to arrest the fall in prices of soyabean, cotton and tur, and immediate relief to farmers affected by the recent unseasonal rains and other natural calamities.

CPI(M) MLA Vinod Nikolay said that the march organized by the Communist Party of India-Marxist passed through Kasara town in Thane district adjoining Mumbai. Nikolay said that the protesters are likely to reach Mumbai on March 20. The MLA said that a delegation of ministers from Maharashtra would hold talks with the representatives of the protesting farmers.

The Maharashtra government on Monday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 300 per quintal to onion farmers who were badly affected by the sharp fall in onion prices. Onion prices have fallen in Maharashtra, resulting in farmers getting very low prices for their produce. Nashik district is a major center of onion cultivation in the country.

This long march of farmers has been supported by the opposition leaders of Maharashtra. Former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray attacked the state government on this issue on Wednesday. Uddhav Thackeray said, “The one whom we call Annadata, he needs to come here from so far away.” It’s a shame. Farmers are coming here, when will you meet.

Earlier, when such a march had taken place a few years ago, some people including Aditya had gone from Shiv Sena’s side. They wanted something including water, we gave them that. Farmers are coming here, you should have gone there and met them. Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister are people’s people.

After the announcement of the farmers’ delegation not coming to Mumbai to meet the government, now a delegation from the state government will go to meet the farmers. He will try to find a solution to this matter.

Cabinet Minister Dada Bhuse said, “There are 14 issues of the farmers. I think we will do whatever can be done within the ambit of the law.

Air India pee gate accused Shankar Mishra moved the Delhi High Court against the unruly passenger tag and sought the constitution of an appellate committee against the tag and his flying ban.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) told the Delhi High Court that it will constitute an appellate panel within a week to hear Shankar Mishra’s appeal.

The plea was heard by Justice Prathiba M Singh who noted DGCA’s submission and posted the matter for further hearing on March 23. Mishra, in his plea, sought expeditious constitution of the panel in accordance with CAR for unruly passengers.

The plea argued that the ban order has factual and legal infirmities and completely misunderstands the physical layout of the aircraft and premises.

Last month, Delhi Patiala House court granted bail to Shankar Mishra on a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh holding that what he allegedly did is disgusting but the court is bound to follow the law. Earlier, he was denied bail by a MM court which held that his alleged act of relieving himself upon the complainant was utterly disgusting and repulsive and sufficient to outrage the modesty of any woman.

On November 26, Shankar Mishra was accused of peeing on a woman co-passenger on board a New York-Delhi Air India flight.

After the news came to light, the DGCA issues a show-cause notice to Air India and slammed the airline for not handling the incident professionally. Mishra was arrested on January 7 from Bengaluru airport after the Delhi Police filed a case against him alleging he defamed India on the international stage.

He was booked under Sections 510 (misconduct in public by a drunken person), 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman), 294 (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place), 354 (intending to outrage modesty) of the Indian Penal Code as well as a section of the Aircraft Rules Act in a case registered at IGI airport police station.

MLAs protest outside Speaker's office

Ruckus erupted outside the Kerala Assembly today as Opposition MLAs of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), staged a protest outside the Speaker’s office and had to be forcibly lifted off the ground by security guards.

Visuals of the incident have surfaced on social media showing the guards forcibly lifting the MLAs who are laying on the ground and refusing to budge outside Speaker AN Shamsheer’s office. The security men finally manage to forcibly lift the MLAs off the ground and out of the building.

Watch the video here:

Speaking to the media, V D Satheesan—Leader of Opposition in the Assembly said four opposition lawmakers— Rema, A K M Ashraf, T V Ibrahim and Saneesh Kumar—were allegedly injured in the incident.

Satheesan lashed out at the Kerala government, claiming it was continuously trampling the democratic rights of the Opposition in the House. “We tried to present the issue of the recent brutal assault faced by a minor girl as an adjournment motion but its notice was denied by the Speaker without any valid reason.”

The Opposition leader alleged that former Kerala home minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was pushed while MLA KK Rema’s hand was twisted and dragged on the floor by four-five women marshals.

Satheesan accused Speaker AN Shamsheer of functioning in a biased manner under pressure from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, adding that CM Vijayan was “terrified of questions” and wants to wind up ongoing Assembly session as fast he can.

The Opposition legislators had staged a protest outside the Speaker’s office after their adjournment motion to discuss the safety of women was turned down. On Tuesday, another adjournment motion to discuss police action against Congress councillors protesting over the Kochi dumpyard fire was also rejected.

Commotion erupted in the house as soon as the Speaker announced that the adjournment motion cannot be taken up as UDF legislators started sloganeering and waving banners against the Vijayan-led government. The lawmakers then walked out of the House and marched to the Speaker’s office where they were blocked by the Watch and Ward staff, who manage security in the state legislature and report to the Speaker.
