THANE: Four NCP activists and supporters of MLA Jitendra Awhad have been served externment notices for two years from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Raigad city limits, informed police.
Abhijit Pawar, Vikram Khamkar, Hemant Wani and V Gaikwad were arrested by the Naupada police last month after they allegedly assaulted a senior municipal official outside the corporation headquarters. The assault was allegedly a reaction to a viral audio clip, supposedly a conversation between the official and his acquaintance, where the former was heard claiming to harm the daughter and son-in-law of MLA Awhad. The later four were released on bail.
The independent externment notices served to the four by assistant commissioner of police, Naupada division, stated the four have serious cognisable offences registered against them at various police stations in Thane and could pose a risk to other citizens and the law and order in the area.
The notices dated March 6, were issued by the Naupada police on March 13, following which the four appeared before the officer and sought an extension of a week, NCP city president Anand Paranjape told the media Monday evening claiming the action was "politically motivated" to harass NCP, Shiv Sena-UBT and Congress activists in Thane. "We will fight it out with all our might. We are not at all scared... we believe the sections have been wrongly put against our activists," he said.
