Man’s plan to kill wife goes wrong, 5-year-old child drowns

LUDHIANA: Khanna police have arrested a man and his sister-in-law for the murder of his 5-year-old daughter by pushing her into a canal near Khant village in Samrala.
The accused, identified as Gurpreet Singh of Rohle village and his sister-in-law Sukhwinder Kaur, were allegedly involved in illicit relationship. Accroding to cops, the duo actually wanted to get rid of Gurpreet’s wife Gurjit to keep their affair alive, but accidentally pushed the child in the canal. Body of Sukhmanpreet Kaur has not been traced yet, police said.
Initially, the police had received information that the parents had killed the girl by throwing her into a canal as part of sacrifice on the directions of a tantrik (godman), but police investigation later revealed the angle of illicit relationship of Gurpreet with his sister-in-law. Police said the accused had planned to kill the girl’s mother by taking her to the canal, but in the melee, the child fell into the canal and was swept away in the water.
Addressing media persons at Khanna on Monday, Khanna SSP Amneet Kondal said Gurpreet’s brother Gurcharan Singh on Sunday informed cops that his sibling had drowned his daughter in a canal on the advice of a tantrik. But when Samrala DSP Waryam Singh and SHO Bhinder Singh investigated the matter, it was found that Gurpreet had a relationship with his sister-in-law and both conspired to kill Gurpreet’s wife Gurjit Kaur.
The police officer said as per the plan, Gurpreet was to take his wife near the canal on Sunday, but Gurjit took their two children — son Sohalpreet Singh (8) and daughter Sukhmanpreet Kaur (5) along with them. She said when Gurpreet was trying to push his wife on the pretext of immersing coconut in the canal near Khant village, his daughter fell into the canal and got swept away.
