Longtime local diocese deacon dies

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Livingston has lost a longtime, constant fixture.

The Catholic Diocese of Beaumont announced Tuesday that Deacon Michael "Mike" Marion died the morning of March 10 at 80 years old.

Ordained on Feb. 25, 2006 by Bishop Curtis Guillory, Marion had spent years serving the St. Joseph parish. He was the director of religious education and director of Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults for many years, the diocese said in the announcement Tuesday.

"...(Marion) continued to be actively involved in all parish and diocese activities as a deacon until his illness forced him to stop," the diocese said.

Born May 10, 1942 in Massena, New York, Marion held a multi-faceted career of managing and technical training, including teaching at a technical college in Fort Lauderdale, Florida until he retired.

"At St. Joseph, in addition to being involved with religious education and (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), Deacon Marion prepared and trained altar servers, volunteered for homebound and nursing home ministry and in the parish office," the diocese said. "He was also a military veteran and a member of the Knights of Columbus."

Marion was preceded in death by his mother and father; wife Shelia Marion; daughter Lorrie McCord and brother Ronnie Marion.

He is survived by his son Pat Marion and wife Lois of Onalaska; daughter Jennifer McKlean and husband Tommy; and sister Linda Arbegast and husband Lee of New York.

"Please pray for the repose of his soul and for the consolation of his family and friends," the diocese said. "May he rest in peace of Christ, the risen Lord."

Marion's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, located at 2590 U.S. 190 W. in Livingston, with internment to follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Groveton.
