Dhankhar: Is 'free fall of info' allowed in name of free speech?
NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar at a meeting on Sunday sought views of various parties on ways to curb disruptions in the House. The second phase of the Budget session will start on Monday.
Opposition MPs raised the issue of alleged misuse of central agencies against non-BJP governments and the move to appoint Dhankhar's personal staff on parliamentary panels.
Sources said that during his interaction, Dhankhar flagged the issue of whether disruptions could be allowed and if members could have a "free fall of information" in the name of free speech in the House as envisaged in Article 105 of the Constitution. The article deals with freedom of speech in Parliament with certain conditions.
Leader of House Piyush Goyal, Jairam Ramesh (Congress), M Shanmugam (DMK), and Ramgopal Yadav (SP) were among those present. Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge later had a one-on-one with Dhankhar. He later said that the opposition parties wanted to play a constructive role in making the government accountable and sought discussions in the House on "every burning issue facing the nation". agencies
