Nashik, Ahmednagar farmers start march to Mumbai
Farmers from the neighbouring areas had started gathering in Nashik since Sunday evening.
NASHIK: On Monday, thousands of farmers from Nashik, Ahmednagar and Palghar districts began a foot march from Nashik city to Mumbai to highlight the woes of the farmers, including the onion growers due to falling wholesale prices at the mandis.
The march is being organised by CPI(M) and other like minded organisations like Kisan Morcha.
The farmers started gathering at Nashik city on Sunday evening from different talukas of Nashik, Ahmednagar and Palghar. The march started after 11.30am. The former CPI(M) MLA from Nashik, Jiva Gavit and the Kisan Morcha leader, Ajit Navale are among the prominent persons leading the foot march.
Navale told TOI that on Sunday evening the Nashik guardian minister, Dada Bhuse had a meeting with the leaders who organised the march. "We have briefed him about the demands of the farmers, who are facing problems on several fronts. Bhuse has assured us that he would convey our demands to chief minister Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis," Navale added.
Navale said that it would take farmers 6-7 days to reach Mumbai and more farmers from other districts are likely to join the march.
Nashik rural police have deployed adequate force for the march. The state highway police have also asked its Nashik and Thane units to carry out proper planning to ensure that there is no traffic jams due to the march on the busy Mumbai-Agra national highway.
