The police have arrested a man for allegedly sexually harassing a 22-year-old engineering graduate near Pune after offering her a lift when she was on her way to attend classes Sunday morning.
The accused, identified as Jaspal Iqbal Singh, 47, works as a manager for a multinational software company, the police said. The incident occurred when the woman was waiting at a bus stop to go for IT-related coaching sessions.
Around 9.45 am, the suspect approached the complainant and asked for directions. He said if she was going in the same direction, he could give her a lift. The complainant got into the car as her classes were in the same area, the police said.
After travelling for a while, the man offered the complainant money for sexual favours, the police said. He also allegedly made indecent gestures at her. As she asked him to stop and tried to get out of the car, the suspect pulled her in and touched her inappropriately.
The woman approached the police, who registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Indian Penal Code sections 354A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).
