It is hardly surprising that James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Due to personal obligations, james cameron was unable to attend the Oscars. On saturday night, james joined the other nominees at a dinner. james cameron, who directed Avatar: The Way of Water, was not present at the Oscars in 2023 despite the fact that his film got several nominations on Sunday. At this year's Oscars, the director's Disney epic received four nominations, including Best Picture. Although being nominated for the first film, cameron did not receive a nomination for Best Director.

In his opening monologue, Kimmel made mention to the absence, saying: "By the way, james cameron isn't here tonight. If even james cameron can't sit through a show, it's too long." He added this joke: "The most costly film ever produced is the avatar sequel. Disney invested $2 billion in this film. All of Nick Cannon's children had to see avatar four times just to break even. And I believe they did."
