MUMBAI: An adult leopard which was noticed prowling late at night at Bhavani Nagar, in Marol, has led to the local residents forming teams to patrol at night for the safety of the locality.
While the state forest department has set up two cage traps in the area, it is likely that the leopard has slipped back towards the forested area of Aarey Colony, and hence it has not been trapped.
Local resident and head of the Shiv Sena Vahtuk-Maharashtra, Intekhab Farooqui, said: "The leopard was seen on CCTV footage on March 7. It was possibly looking for a prey in this area. After we residents informed the forest department, two cage traps have been set up, but the leopard has not been caught. We have advised the children not to play late in the evenings, and always go out in groups if they have to."
A wildlife activist said that leopards often come out of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and go towards Aarey Colony in search of food at night, since Aarey is actually a natural continuation of the forest.
Humans are advised to follow the safety tips of the forest department in order to safeguard themselves and their families.
