KANPUR: A 39-year-old man allegedly committed suicide on Saturday night hours after his wife ended life by hanging herself.
The incident took place in Dasipura village under the limits of Bharthana police station in Etawah district.
Raju, a resident of Dasipura village, who owned about five ‘bigha' of agricultural land, had obtained a Kisan Credit Card from the Central Bank and spent nearly four lakh rupees using the card.
Apart from this, he had also taken a loan of about three lakh rupees from his relatives and friends.
According to police, as Raju was reeling under huge debt and was unable to repay the loan, the bank and his other creditors used to complain to his wife every other day. “Often, there used to be a fight between Raju and his wife over the same issue,” the police further said.
On late Saturday night, the two again had a fight over the same issue after which Raju left the house. When he returned home after some time, he saw the body of his wife Shikha Devi (36) hanging from the ceiling of the room. Thereafter, he again left the house. The family members later discovered Raju’s body too was hanging from a tree nearly 200 metre away from his house. The family members informed the police.
Inspector Kotwali Vidhya Sagar Singh said Raju was in heavy debt. “The family members have informed us that there was a dispute between husband and wife on Saturday night regarding his debts. Following the quarrel, both of them took the extreme steps by hanging themselves. The case is being investigated,” the police inspector further said.
