CHENNAI: At least eight luxury cars - four Ferraris, two Lamborghinis, a Porsche and a BMW - were fined by the Greater Chennai Traffic Police on Sunday morning near Marina beach for rash and negligent driving, defective number plates and tampered silencers.
While some of them were registered in Puducherry, others had Maharashtra number plates.
A fine of ₹500 each was levied for defective number plate and ₹1,000 each for speeding and dangerous driving. Police also checked if there were challans pending against them and said they let off the violators after a warning.
Deputy commissioner of police, traffic, East, Samay Singh Meena said, "The owners were fined for various offences including defective number plates, use of mobile phone while driving, over speeding and tampered silencers. In the case of defective number plates, we have asked them to rectify the number plates and send us photographs of it to ensure they do not violate the rule again".
According to police sources, the vehicles were returning from Mamallapuram. They were intercepted for rash driving at around 9 am by traffic cops along Kamarajar Salai near the Napier bridge.
The stretch was barricaded and the cars were halted for a check. Police said none of them were drunk.
In February, the traffic police had conducted special drives, caught 43,367 vehicles with defective number plates and asked the owners to effect the correction on the spot.
A senior police officer said they imposed a fine on all vehicles.
"Mostly, we don't come across these luxury cars on weekdays. These vehicles are known for carrying fancy number plates. So we were ready for them," he said.
