Sandusky's Caleb Minard reacts to a made 3-pointer during a game earlier this season. He was voted Blue Water Area Athlete of the Week on Thursday.

When Caleb Minard first played organized basketball in elementary school, he wasn't a fan of the sport.

Funny how things change. Not only did Minard come to enjoy it, he eventually became one of the key fixtures on the Sandusky boys basketball team.

The senior was voted Blue Water Area Athlete of the Week on Thursday for the week of Feb. 27-March 4. Minard scored 29 points in the Wolves' 67-49 win over Elkton-Pigeon-Bay-Port Laker on March 2. He made eight 3-pointers.

The Times Herald recently caught up with Minard to learn more about him.

Times Herald: How long have you been playing basketball?

Caleb Minard: I've been playing since third grade when our school first (offered) teams for it. At first, basketball was always my least favorite (sport). But then around my freshman year, something clicked and it became my favorite sport.

TH: What makes you such a talented player?

Minard: I think most of it is the team I'm on. Our team — we don't have a guy that's going to crush you every night. But we have a lot of guys that can play and I think we work really well together. I think that's most of it.

TH: Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Minard: Right now, my favorite athlete is probably Jaden Ivey. I enjoyed watching him in college. And Cassius Winston, too, I really liked watched him in college because I'm a Michigan State fan. Those two guys are not overly big and there's something about their games that's just fun to watch.

TH: What do you enjoy doing outside of basketball?

Minard: Outside of basketball, I mostly spend time with my friends doing whatever we can. Or when I'm not doing that, I have some volunteering that I do in the community.

TH: What's been your favorite part of the season so far?

Minard: My favorite part of the season is how we've turned it around (as a team). We started off really weak. And recently, we've just been playing really well. In some of the games that we've been the underdogs in, we've been surprising a lot of people. Especially Wednesday night (in a 50-46 win) against Port Laker.
