Man fakes identity, rapes 22-year-old varsity topper in Surat

SURAT: Police arrested a man on Saturday who allegedly changed identity and raped a 22-year-old post graduate topper from a leading university.
Accused Wasim Akram had introduced himself as Vasu Gwaladiya and entered into a business partnership with the rape survivor and later developed friendship with her. Promising marriage, he developed physical relations as well.
The rape survivor came across Wasim’s aadhaar card and found his true identity. She then approached the Vesu police and lodged a rape complaint. Police arrested the accused for rape and criminal breach of trust.
According to her complaint, the survivor, a Vesu resident, started event management services along with her studies a few months ago. At around this time, she also came in contact with Wasim who offered her partnership in business since his previous woman partner had quit.
After starting a partnership in event management, he also developed friendship with the survivor and started meeting her outside the office as well. Wasim took the survivor to a hotel claiming work and there promising marriage he developed a physical relation with her. The survivor alleged that she did not know then that the accused was from a different religion. The accused started raping her since July 2022.
Meanwhile, in February the survivor found his aadhaar card of Wasim in their office and knew about his actual identity. She ended the relationship and discontinued business partnership as well.
“The accused is a native of Rajasthan and the police will investigate if the accused victimized more girls as well," said the police. The survivor's father is an employee of a textile mill.
