Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police SWAT officers continued to negotiate late Saturday with a man armed with a gun in a Steele Creek home, 13 hours after responding to a call the man was outside the home threatening neighbors.

The man was “suffering from a mental health crisis,” police said on Twitter.

Just after 5 p.m., a SWAT officer fired a shot from his rifle “after a perceived, imminent deadly threat,” but it didn’t appear the bullet struck the man, police said. Police have not disclosed the threat that prompted the shot.

The shooting happened in the 3800 block of Griers Fork Drive, police said, calling the investigation “active and ongoing.”

Officers saw the man holding a gun in his home in the 3800 block of Griers Fork Drive when they arrived about 6:45 a.m., CMPD said.

The man “barricaded himself inside his home” when officers tried to contact him, according to CMPD.

“Our SWAT Team deployed and arrived on scene to begin to de-escalate and communicate with the armed individual,” CMPD said on Twitter.

“Please avoid the area as officers work to peacefully de-escalate the incident,” police urged the public on Twitter at the time.
