KOLKATA: The Muchipara police has arrested four members of an interstate gang from Burdwan for allegedly duping a Maharashtra-based student of Rs 30.7 lakh by promising her a medical seat at the government-run NRS Medical College and Hospital.
The victim, an MBBS aspirant, had cracked NEET but she was not getting admission in a government college of her choice and eventually, fell into the trap of the accused.
Cops said that total six people had demanded a hefty amount of money from the victim to get her a seat in NRS Medical College and Hospital. The accused sent her some forged admission-related documents and asked her to come to Kolkata. When the victim and her kin contacted the hospital authorities, they realised that they had been duped. The victim informed the Muchipara police about the fraud and cops launched a probe in the third week of February. Till now, four of the six accused landed in the police net.
"The accused were arrested recently by Burdwan police for being involved in a similar fraud. We brought them to Kolkata from a local jail there and produced them in a local court here. The accused are in police custody. We are questioning them on their other accomplices who are involved in the fraud and raids are on to nab them. We are trying to recover the siphoned money and return it to the victim. We suspect that the accused are part of an organised gang and they might have duped several others," said an officer. Cops suspect two telecallers may be associated with the fake admission racket.
