Thane: A 28-year-old unemployed man was duped of Rs 9.6 lakh by cyber fraudsters. The fraudsters lured him into making investments in their fake business online. Initially, the offered him a job wherein they would pay him for liking videos on You-Tube The victim, a Kasarwadavali resident, had uploaded his resume on various job portals seeking a job. On February 15, he received a message on WhatsApp asking if he was interested in a job and also mentioned a link to click and told him to like the YouTube videos for which he will be paid, said the police officer.
Later, the accused sent him a Telegram ID and asked him to get the payment from them. The accused using the ID asked the complainant for his bank account number. Rs 210 was deposited in his account and another Rs 90 was also given to the complainant. “The accused gave him information from another app and told him that from next time, his money deposited would be shown on the app for which he will have to register and pay a higher amount,” said the police officer quoting the complaint. The accused was lured and after Rs 1,000 was deposited into his account and his balance was shown as Rs 1,200 and after depositing Rs 7,000 his balance showed Rs 8,400. Later lured by the scheme, he started sending money to various UPI ids to getting the handsome interest in return . However, after he tried to remove some amount from the account and was unable to, the accused told him that the account been locked and that he will have to shell out more money to open it. The accused told him that he got the amount which was shown in the application. However, he was unable to get any kind of refund and realised that it was a scam. A case has been registered with the Kasarvadavali police station under cheating and relevant sections of Information Technology Act.
