RAJKOT: Three of a family including a couple and their daughter allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a canal in Surendranagar town.
The bodies of Dipesh Patadiya (59), his wife Praful (50), and 19-year-old daughter Utsavi were fished out by the fire brigade from the Dudhrej canal. Their identities were established from documents found in Patadiya's clothes.
The exact reason behind the drastic step has not been ascertained yet. The bodies were sent to Rajkot Civil Hospital for forensic postmortem. Police were informed about the bodies by some farmers.
Patadiya's son Bhavin, who works in a private firm in Ahmedabad, told the police that he had spoken to his father on Thursday evening but did not find anything amiss during the conversation. He also said that he was not aware of any financial stress in the family or any other reason.
The police got to know from the neighbours that the family hailed from Wadhwan town and was living on rent in Surendranagar for the past six to seven months.
Patadiya had been operating a tailoring shop in the town for many years.
