DEHRADUN: The chief judicial magistrate of Champawat district awarded five years' imprisonment to four Chinese nationals, who were arrested from the Indo-Nepal Banbasa border when they were trying to flee to Kathmandu in 2019.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 45,000 on each. A Tibetan man, who had brought the Chinese men, was also arrested but died due to Covid in a Delhi hospital in 2019.
An FIR under sections of the IPC and the Foreigners Act was lodged on July 27, 2019. According to an immigration officer, the five accused were taken into custody when they were trying to flee in a bus from Delhi to Kathmandu in 2019. Police recovered fake IDs from them.
The men told officials that they were arrested in Mumbai for smuggling gold worth Rs 6.78 crore and silver worth Rs 13 crore, following which their passports were confiscated. After getting bail, they came in contact with the Tibetan man who promised to take them to Nepal without a passport by charging Rs 10,000 each.
