Under the leadership of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, a workshop was held under the department of medical education and research for discussing the contours of this project here on Friday with experts from across the country deliberating on the road map and operational design.
“The land has been earmarked and this world-class facility for cancer research centre has been named as South Asia Cancer Research Centre and is likely to be the single largest cancer research facility in the South Asian region,” a state government official said.
Assam commissioner and secretary (medical education and research) Siddharth Singh informed that this would be one of the topmost cancer research centres with an attached paediatric oncology hospital for child-related cancer treatment.
He said a paediatric cardiology wing has also been envisaged as part of the project to leverage the high-class infrastructure for paediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery as well.
Dr D Nori, an internationally acclaimed expert, having closely worked with US’s Memorial Sloan Kettering, a leading cancer research institution, also physically participated in the discussion.
Scientists and faculty from AllMS, SCl, BBCI, llT Guwahati, GMCH and ACCF hospitals were invited to critically appraise the presentations made by the Indian arm of US-based consulting organisation M/S IQVIA lNC, which have been entrusted with the responsibility of preparing the project report and a road map to take the project towards execution.
